Aveley 2, Lewes 0
GOALS in each half from ensured Aveley remain in an impressive second place in the Isthmian Premier and their 2-0 home win against Lewes makes it six wins on the spin for Danny Scopes' side, who responded to their manager's pre-match challenge.
The opening goal came from George Sykes just after the half hour and Oli Coker grabbed a second ten minutes into the second half.
Millers had the best of the early opportunities and had what looked like a justifiable penalty claim when Jason Ring was fouled waved away.
Manny Ogunrinde then shot just wide but the goal that looked likely arrived on 33 minutes when Sykes chased down a ball over the top and struck the ball home with his left foot for his 19th goal of the season.
Aveley took the lead into the break and should have extended it in the opening minutes of the second half when Kenny Aileru was brought down in the box but, when he picked the ball up and tried to convert the penalty, Lewes keeper Lewis Carey saved.
However, a second Aveley goal wasn't long in coming when Coker seized on a 55th minute opportunity and fired the ball home in off the woodwork.
The last half hour of the match proved to be fractious as the referee lost his grip on the game and a number of surly incidents occurred by Millers kept their cool and held on for another fine victory.
