FORMER Grays and Thurrock resident Lee Woollard, 38, has won the prestigious Singapore Rugby Union Men's National League 2022/23 with his club, Bucks.
The Bucks 1st XV beat their opponents SCC 1st XV in the Cup Final by 15 points to 8.
Local media described the game as a 'thrilling display of athleticism and sportsmanship' and a 'remarkable display of grit and determination.'
Lee began playing rugby at Grays School and then Palmer's College. He went on to play for Greenwich University and Sidcup, and won a handful of caps for the England Deaf Rugby Union team, on account of some hearing loss in one ear.
Lee thinks the final could well have been his last game at this level. The following morning, after a night of celebrations, he said: "This may well be my last game - my body is sore as well as my head! We'll see how I feel next season, but I think I may go out on a high."
Lee's parents, Tim and Vera Harrold of Grays, said on hearing the news of his success: "We're really happy for him, but we wish we could've seen him win the cup in the flesh."
