IT'S been another week of change, turmoil and plenty of recrimination in Thurrock as the borough council's financial affairs continue to unravel and more information gradually seeps into the public domain.

Part of the fallout was an announcement by acting leader Cllr Mark Coxshall of changes to his cabinet and a reduced number of portfolio holders – though his choice of finance leader surprised some council watchers.

He has appointed Cllr Graham Snell to the post, and ardent champion of the catastrophic 'borrow to invest' policy that has become the catalyst for so many problems.

That news came on the day the council's leading finance director came up between a rock and a hard place in front of the authority's general services committee.

Away from the council coalface, where politicians and officers appear determined to dig even deeper holes for themselves, there has been some upbeat news.

A Thurrock Nub News report from Fobbing turned the spotlight on the return to glory of a former borough milk float, an item that evoked a host memories for generations brought up in eras when milk was brought daily to their door.

And the contribution of volunteers to a successful reading programme across the borough's libraries also brought a smile to the face as their efforts were publicly recognised by borough mayor Cllr James Halden.

A story that was rated 'just purrfect' was a report on a hugely successful event in Chafford Hundred where large crowds turned out to enjoy cakes, cats and a cuddle.

The life and achievements of Thurrock woman Jane Packer were marked by the unveiling of a plaque at her birthplace and childhood home in Chadwell St Mary, again sparking many memories and tributes to a much-loved lady.

There was a busy week of borough sport, capped by a fine win that moves Grays Athletic right into contention at the top of the Isthmian North.

And a number of job opportunities at the Port of Tilbury were also highlighted on our pages.

Finally the borough said farewell on Thursday to one of its leading figures in the volunteer community. There were many moving tributes at the funeral of Kristina Jackson.
