That was the week that was: A mixed bag of remorse, recrimination and royal memories

Happy memories at Tilbury
Happy memories at Tilbury

IN a week dominated by the death of HM Queen Elizabeth II, Thurrock has still managed to show what a hotbed of political intrigue it is – and the continuing undercurrent of anti-social behaviour continued with another significant incident involving public safety at lakeside.

The local reaction to the death of Her Majesty has been reported on Nub News, since last Thursday's announcement of her death.

Many have contributed to discussions about her three visits to Thurrock – detailed in this story.

And Nub News will continue to cover all aspects of her legacy, and the inspiration she provided to generations.

That was reflected in our coverage of an afternoon tea party held in Tilbury.

A day of heritage and memories at Purfleet.

Bikers also rode their machines to a heritage centre in Purfleet at the weekend to show their respect.

Sadly, not everyone views things in the same way – and the theft of a tribute post box topper in many ways summed up the lack of respect that remains deep-seated among the borough community.

Some of that lack of perception and tolerance event came from the local Conservative hierarchy, the chairman of the local party's Grays group criticising members of the Royal British Legion – and members of his own party – for attending a very sombre and respectful evening to mark the 100th anniversary of the Royal British Legion locally.

Tuesday evening brought an incident at Lakeside that sparked lots of local concern when it was reported a gun had been fired in a local retail park.

At the weekend an event that had been much-criticised took place. And the music festival held at the Crooked Billet appeared to confound its critics and was adjudged a great success.

The overarching local story continues to be the state of Thurrock Council's finances.

More twists were unveiled last night (Thursday, 15 September) and wherever retribution will lie – there remain some difficult decisions to make.

And while concern and controversy continue to dog Thurrock Council, an education trust in the east of the borough is also finding itself in a negative light.
