THURROCK planning councillors are being recommended to approve a controversial plan for seven new homes on an existing site occupied by just two homes in Stanford-le-Hope.

A number of previous applications to develop the site at 53-55 Third Avenue in the Homesteads ward have been rejected - as have two planning appeals but this time - despite a number of objections from residents - the scheme has won official approval.

Dementia garden opened

THE borough's MP and deputy mayor were on hand to open a new garden and support facility designed for dementia sufferers in Thurrock.

Cllr James Halden and MP Jackie-Doyle-Price shared the ribbon-cutting duties at Thurrock Community Hospital on Long Lane yesterday (Friday, 9 July) when the Alzheimer's memory garden was opened.

Cllr Jane Pothecary has called for Thurrock council to reinstate its policy of locking cemeteries.

AFTER a recent spate of antisocial behaviour, vandalism and theft from graves, Thurrock Council's opposition Labour group has called on the Conservative authority to start locking cemeteries at night again - reversing a policy first proposed by a Labour administration.

The most prominent act of desecration took place in Chadwell St Mary cemetery last weekend, but there have been many other similar incidents reported across the borough.

Plans are being laid to bring change to Grays riverfront.

THURROCK Council's leading regeneration councillor Mark Coxshall has spoken of his optimism for the future of Grays and Tilbury towns – while the authority has released images of the improvements it would like to see as part of a multi-million investment in both areas.

Cllr Coxshall was speaking after he made a presentation to the council's Cabinet about the Grays and Tilbury Town Boards, which have been set up to obtain government funding for regeneration from the Towns Fund which was set up in 2019 to drive economic regeneration and deliver long-term economic and productivity growth in 101 town across the country.

A THURROCK-based chef was recently acclaimed the best Indian chef in Essex.

Humayun Rashid, a chef at Kushi, who have restaurants across Essex including several in Thurrock, won 'Best Indian Chef in Essex' at the recent Asian and Oriental Chef Awards.
