THE Planning Inspectorate has overruled a unanimous decision by elected councillors in Thurrock to block an increase in the number of homes on a site earmarked for development.

It is a decision that ends months of wrangling by housing developer St Modwen Homes who were branded 'greedy' by councillors who opposed their own officers' recommendation for approval for the site on the former Ford factory in South Ockendon.

COUNCILLORS have thrown out a bid for 86 apartments and six houses which developers hoped would make up the latest phase of the regeneration of the former Fords site on Arisdale Avenue in South Ockendon.

The application was given short shrift when it came before Thurrock Council's planning committee last month and councillors were close to rejecting it then – but gave builder St Modwen Homes a chance to come back with a 'better offer' after branding them 'greedy'.

A MAN who police had appealed for help to find is home safe after going missing from Grays.
