Thurrock Yacht Club members assisting the lift out

FOR decades one of the main signs of autumn arriving in Grays has been the arrival of the crane at Thurrock Yacht Club to lift the boats out of the water for wintering ashore.

This year's event on 23 and 24 October provided a grand spectacle for anybody viewing from the sea wall, but it was special for a couple of reasons.

A THURROCK pub has been bedecked with poppies to mark the start of the build-up to this year's remembrance commemorations.

Members of the Grays-based Needles and Chat group were at the Wharf on Wharf Road South in the town this morning (Sunday, 24 October) knitting woollen poppies and decorating the exterior of the pub.

ST Luke's Hospice has launched a partnership with New Look as part of the national 'Give back, Feel Good' campaign and its Grays High Street charity shop will play a key part.

The charity shop will be offering customers a New Look discount code when they donate a bag of pre-loved clothing as part of the campaign which is a partnership, jointly run by New Look and national charity, Hospice UK.

Sir David Jason narrates Matt Harris's documentary.

THURROCK-based film director Matt Harris was one of the leading lights behind a documentary aired this weekend telling the story behind the development of the Lancaster bomber.

"The Lancaster at 80", which was narrated by Sir David Jason, looks at the incredible speed with which the iconic plane was designed and deployed along with its legacy and key role in winning the Second World War.

East Thurrock United took a drubbing at the hands of Enfield Town.

EAST Thurrock United goalkeeper Arthur Janata spared his side the embarrassment of equalling their worst ever defeat when he saved a penalty late in the game today (Saturday, 23 October).

At the time Rocks were 8-0 down and had the penalty been scored, the result would have matched the 9-0 defeat at the hands of Eton Manor in the Essex Senior League in 1982.
