THE conclusion of Remembrance services in Thurrock on Armistice Day, 11 November, saw a number of events across the borough - with many venues, stores and public places marking 11am with a two minute silence.

A service was held at the war memorial in Grays, attended by senior local dignitaries and representatives of service organisations. Joining Peter Taylor, vice chairman of Grays Thurrock Royal British Legion, in laying a wreath were children from Woodside Academy.

Similar services took place at memorials across the borough, including at Stanford-le-Hope where RAF Association Padre Maureen McPherson led prayers.

Meanwhile, in neighbouring Corringham, students from Mossbourne Fobbing Academy also marked Armistice Day when they gathered for its annual Remembrance Service.

At 10:50am as the bell sounded, staff and students made their way onto the English Playground in solemn silence. Under the direction of Mr Russell, cadets stood proudly to attention, setting the tone for a respectful and dignified ceremony.

Miss Latham delivered a moving recital of The Ode of Remembrance, followed by the haunting notes of The Last Post performed by Mr Kew. A two-minute silence was observed across the academy — a powerful moment of stillness — before Reveille sounded, symbolising hope and renewal.

Wreaths were then laid by the Principal, cadets, Herd Lane, governors, and visiting guests.

In his address, Principal Sam Cooper reflected on the significance of remembrance in our daily lives, saying: "Remembrance is not only about looking back. It's about the choices we make now — to show kindness, courage, and integrity in all that we do. The world our students inherit will be shaped by the compassion and respect they show one another."

"We remember all those who gave their lives, and those who continue to risk their lives, so that we may be protected and live in freedom."

He concluded by encouraging students to carry forward the lessons of history — "not just in words, but in deeds" — so that the freedoms we enjoy today continue to endure.

The school has offered thanks go to Miss Latham, Mr Kew, Mr Strickland, Mr Russell, and cadets for their dedication in ensuring the service was 'both moving and memorable', adding: "It was a powerful reminder that, as a school community, we stand together in gratitude and remembrance."

A similar event took place at Hathaway School in Grays.

Its cadets were also joined by students and staff to lay wreaths.

On Tuesday evening, the Port of London Authority's annual Maritime Remembrance Service took place at the Cruise Terminal, Tilbury.

Tilbury Band

There was a large attendance at the historic building, where Tilbury Band provided the music.

Wreathes were laid by civic guests including Thurrock Mayor Cllr Sue Shinnin and Thurrock MP Jen Craft, representatives of the PLA and Port of Tilbury and Forth Ports, local service organisation representatives and cadets.

The service was led by Port chaplain Ruth Campbell, a popular figure at the Port of Tilbury and the Queen Victoria Seafarers Rest Seaman's Mission, which was refurbished earlier this year.
