THURROCK-based South Essex Wildlife Hospital is hoping regional residents will help it find more sites where it can safely release hedgehogs back into the wild.

Due to the decline in the species and the difficulties in finding suitable release sites for rehabilitated wildlife staff at the hospital at Orsett are undertaking a research survey to find out where in Essex hedgehog populations are.

Thurrock photographer Nick Lay was on hand to capture images of Saturday's racing.

THAMES barge racing drew crowds to the riverside on Saturday (14 August) when spectators enjoyed the spectacle of nine boats challenging racing times and the tide as they were in competition off the shore of Thurrock.

The Gravesend Reach to Mouse Channel Thames Sailing Barge match featured a number of restored historic boats and produced thrilling views for those watching, including spectators who go a bird's eye view from the roof of the Thameside Nature Reserve visitor centre at Mucking as the vessels assembled in Gravesend Reach then sailed a course across the Thames.

A THURROCK man has urged fellow Thurrock residents to become more proactive and engage in helping the police enforce regulations in an HGV-blighted area of the borough.

Last month Thurrock Nub News reported on increasing concerns about the number of HGVs flouting the rules in West Thurrock on London road and ignoring weight restrictions.

THE borough's Gurkha and Nelapese community will be out in force tomorrow (Sunday, 15 August) at an event at the Purfleet Heritage and Military Centre on Centurion Way.

It will be an opportunity for visitors to see the Gurkha exhibition within the centre and also enjoy special evens like cannon and rifle firing and to see Nepalese dancers and sample Nepalese cuisine.

SOMETHING of a mystery surrounds a reported theft of dogs being investigated by police – but which a local councillor who had expressed her concerns believes may have been a hoax.

Residents in the Orsett and Horndon areas were alerted on social media to be aware of a theft of animals from a local kennels, with ward councillor Sue Little among those sharing the news.
