A JOINT police and council operation to crack down on nuisance drivers in West Thurrock over the weekend saw five fines issued, one motorist reported for suspicion of careless driving and one person given a community resolution for possession of cannabis.

Teams from Thurrock Council and Essex Police worked together to prevent car cruisers from gathering in West Thurrock. They also worked with the Metropolitan Police to make sure that the event did not move on into a neighbouring London borough.

Kitchen caddies and larger outdoor food waste containers are being mooted for Thurrock homes

CHANGES are likely to be made to the collection of household garden and kitchen waste in Thurrock next year – with residents being given an additional two bins, one of which will be a caddy.

Currently the council operates a three bin system, with a green (or grey/black) bin used for general waste, a blue bin for recyclable materials and a brown bin (which is emptied fortnightly) used for garden and kitchen waste – though the council has been keen to urge residents not to use it for kitchen waste, and particularly kitchen waste in compostable bags.

THURROCK Council is calling on the borough's smokers to quit for 'Stoptober' and join the 2.3 million others who have made a quit attempt since it launched in 2012.

Cllr Allen Mayes, Cabinet Member for Health, said: "Smoking remains one of the leading causes of premature death. Smoking is also a significant health issue here in Thurrock where around 680 people die prematurely from smoking every year.

WORK may finally be about to begin on the building of a highly controversial flats complex in the heart of Grays that will feature 41 new homes.

The apartment building, on the site of the now demolished Dominoes snooker hall at the end of New Road, adjacent to the parish church of St Peter and St Paul, was opposed by local residents and members of the church community, but after many wrangled permission was granted in 2013.
